resi team

The residential team here at Building Careers UK (BCUK) has seen rapid growth year on year and there’s no sign of things slowing down just yet! 2019 has brought an influx of competitive and exclusive opportunities with reputable developers across the North-West and we are representing more quality award-winning candidates than ever before.

I joined BCUK in June 2015 and worked alongside Emma Hughes, our residential Trades & Labour specialist. Since then, we have grown the team to help manage the demand and after two additional recruits over the last six months we now have a brilliant team of six!

At BCUK, we aim to embrace five values in our day to day work; Quality, Team, Innovation, Expertise and Above and Beyond. Providing a quality service to both our clients and candidates is so important to us. As the industry has continued to boom and the number of opportunities within the sector has continued to rise, it seemed logical to expand the residential team so that we can continue to provide a quality service.

We have welcomed both Andrew Brady and James Unwin to the residential team as Senior Consultants. They are both off to a flying start and we are excited to see them succeed here at BCUK.

Andy joined us in November 2018, bringing with him nearly 5 years’ recruitment experience. Andy has a great knowledge and understanding of technical roles and so it seemed logical that we utilise his expertise; he is now the point of contact for all permanent technical vacancies within the residential sector.

James is our latest recruit, joining the team in January 2019. James has 2 years’ experience in recruitment and will be specialising in permanent operational roles across the North-West. He is already representing a number of top quality award winning candidates and recruiting for 5* developers who have brand new sites in the pipeline. Big things to come from our two latest recruits!

Our Resourcers, Kym Barnes and Sarah Tighe, are the backbone of our residential team. Their dedication and commitment to finding quality candidates is second to none!

My focus for the year ahead will be on the freelance market. Over the last 12 months I have seen an increase in the number of people interested in working on a freelance basis. In March 2018, myself and a few of my colleagues attended an REC event (Scale Up: In The Round) where the former Chief Executive, Kevin Green, was talking about growing market trends for self-employment as people are seeking more flexibility and a better work-life balance. I work with a number of excellent Freelance Site Managers who commit themselves fully to the job regardless of the length of the contract. It is these Freelancers who I want to keep working with throughout 2019.

Over the last 4 years I have seen first-hand how the housing market has gone from strength to strength and you only need to glimpse at the headlines on ‘Housebuilder News’ to see the success the housing industry is experiencing. Official government figures show that new build completions are up 6.4% year on year.

House builder’s targets have increased each year and salaries have soared. Despite uncertainty surrounding brexit, the future for the new build housing market remains to look positive as latest planning permission statistics show an annual run rate of approximately 350,000 plots per year. Moreover, the number of new homes registered with NHBC in October was up 8% from last year.

It is also great to see that many house builders are investing the time and money into bringing new talent into the industry. One of my most recent placements was for a Trainee Architectural Technician for Keepmoat Homes who have exceptional training opportunities. My candidate, Luke, impressed at the interview and is enjoying his new role:

“Building Careers have been brilliant. I am now a Trainee Architectural Technician completing my HNC qualification with Keepmoat Homes, which has been made possible through Elle and the BCUK team. I can now look forward to a successful career in housing development” – Luke Kemel
