Research from consultant Arcadis last week has stated that the construction industry needs to recruit over 400,000 people every year between now and 2021 to cope with the sectors predicted workload. That is equivalent to one worker every 77 seconds.
Construction Enquirer has published the figures from the Arcadis Talent Scale, predicting the rise of the ‘Minted’ workforce - “the Most in Need Trades Earning Double.”
The greatest need is for carpenters and joiners, where demand accounts for nearly one sixth of all national resource requirements. Plumbers, Electricians, and Bricklayers are also in high demand, particularly in the labour-intensive housebuilding sector. The report also identifies a need for over 7,400 Civil Engineers, 7,300 Quantity Surveyors and 26,400 Construction Directors. Arcadis Director of Workforce Planning James Bryce has commented that key to this "skills gulf" is to look beyond just attracting new talent to the industry, and to look at the efficiency of the industry as it stands, and make changes from within.
At Building Careers UK, we are committed to doing our bit to mend the UK skills gap. It’s a hefty problem, but we believe that if all employers could do more to get people into the industry, particularly young people, we can make sure there are enough people with the right skills to build our houses, hospitals and schools of the future.
We visit career fairs to attract talent to the industry, we promote careers in construction at networking events on a regional and national level, and we place training as a top priority. That’s why we provide free facefit training to all BCUK site workers. Call 0151 230 1690 for details.
This year, we’ve taken our commitment to training one step further. We have started a partnership for 2017 with WJB Training and Consultancy, who provide a range of training services across Construction, First Aid, Health and Safety and Business Management. To register interest in training courses for yourself, or your staff, please enquire here.
If you’d like to upskill in your career, or to take a step into the construction industry – there is no better time. Contact us to look for your next move, or the training that could help you get there.
