Last Wednesday I attended a Constructing Excellence breakfast seminar at which Christian Spence gave a talk regarding how Brexit has, and will, effect construction in the North West.

As a result of this, I thought I would write a quick update on how Brexit has affected our industry of Commercial Property and the wider Surveying industry, and how I feel things will move forward throughout 2017.

I suppose we should start at the beginning. The days following the Brexit were full of shock, as we awoke to realise the potential ramifications of the decision that had been made. The pound dropped and there was a sense of uncertainty across the board as meetings were held at large organisations across the UK on how to ensure business continuity.

But where are we now?

Since Brexit, I have noticed a real lack of impact on our sector. Consultancies are recruiting across the board for a wide range of positions. Confidence in the market did drop during the first weeks, however this seems to have returned back to normal. The vast majority of my clients would agree when I say that they are extremely busy. Several of my clients will testify to missing my calls several times during the week, to then return the call at 7pm on a Friday evening to have a half an hour chat because they have been working tirelessly to complete their workload!

Christian Spence mentioned a figure that jumped out at me during the presentation: - 8/10 construction companies are currently looking to recruit new talent into their organisation. So what is the problem?

There is a real skills shortage in the North West for a range of disciplines. Regardless of the job role, Consultancies have a real lack of available talent to choose from.

So what does this mean for you?

There are opportunities available regardless of the career path that you are looking to take in the construction industry. I personally have a large number of opportunities available in several large and small consultancies across the North West.

There have been pay rises across the industry in the past few years. I have noticed that some organisations are stuck in the past, paying up to £7000 under market rate for candidates in some cases, leading only to the candidates becoming restless and under-appreciated.

Maybe this is familiar to you – you feel overworked and undervalued. Or you may be bored at work, thinking that this is it – the same old projects week in week out, no diversity in workload. There are some major projects kicking off across the region, with some extremely interesting work that will enhance the North West's fortunes going forward.
