We hope that you've had a lovely break over the festive period. We thought it would be worthwhile to write a short review of 2019 and a preview of 2020. Lots has happened over the previous 12 months in what has been a very successful year and we're looking forward to another fantastic year and decade. 

A Review of 2019

We’ve experienced an interesting year in the Property and Architecture team during 2019. We’ve added Sam Mackie to focus on Architectural appointments across the North West and he’s been a welcome addition, working hard (and seemingly never going home!) to ensure that our clients have the best chance at finding the right talent.  

It’s been great catching up with many of our contacts at events such as the Manchester Society of Architecture Dinner, the RICS QS and Construction Dinner and a number of others. It’s also been a pleasure to have participated in a number of fundraising events such as Tough Mudder for our charity of the year, Mind. We were thrilled to raise £4747 for this great cause in 2019.

What a great year we have enjoyed with our clients, strengthening existing relationships and developing new ones through some excellent candidate placements. We’ve had to work extremely hard to overcome the obvious skills shortage in the industry, working closely with our clients to diversify the sector talent pool and improve industry attraction techniques.

Our client strategy is simple. We strive to provide real value that supports business growth, offering both a recruitment service and advice on employment benefits and staffing levels in a tough market. It’s been an eye-opening year for us as we’ve had a large number of new clients contact us via recommendations due to the challenges they’ve been facing to attract the right staff. Whilst it’s always good to meet new companies and to be able to assist as many people as possible, it does indicate that we are all in the same boat; there are only a finite amount of skilled professionals in the industry, and companies are facing tough challenges in the current economic and political climate.

Many of our successes this year have come from our consultative relationships with clients; a true understanding of how each other work and partnerships that allows us to select candidates that may otherwise be overlooked. These partnerships have given a number of candidates with tonnes of potential the opportunity to showcase their talents in a different discipline. 

We’ve enjoyed the challenge of helping a number of candidates with these career changes as well, transitioning into different roles within the construction industry to reduce the impact of the skills shortage. This hasn’t been the only challenge with candidates though, as both we and our clients have noticed a reluctance amongst some to move from positions in which they are not necessarily happy but do feel secure, which has detracted from the market’s usual buoyancy. 

How is 2020 looking? 

The feeling amongst our clients for 2020 is one of great confidence, with many reporting heightened activity in the final quarter of 2019. This is backed up by some extremely promising reports arising from market sources, with the North West seeing a flurry of project approvals and project starts across various sectors. The Healthcare sector is booming, for example, with the North West seeing the highest number of planning approvals for such projects by a considerable distance. Similarly, the Retail and Leisure sectors are also set to thrive in the region with project starts and project approvals across both being amongst the highest in the UK. 

We expect 2020 to be a busy year and we’re already working with a number of clients on recruitment plans for the coming year, with an eye on the market for the right candidates. 

We also foresee a year of growth internally so we’re on the look-out for talented recruiters with experience working within the Property industry.
